Vacuum bombs work by sucking in oxygen from the surrounding air to generate a longer-lasting, high-temperature explosion
Vacuum bombs are also known as thermobaric weapons.
Vacuum bombs are capable of vaporising human bodies, crushing internal organs and reducing cities to rubble.
Both the US and the Soviet Union initially developed thermobaric weapons in the 1960s.
The CIA has previously published a report stating vacuum bombs can “obliterate” anyone “near the ignition point”.
The fuel–air explosive is one of the best-known types of thermobaric weapon.
Thermobaric weapons are almost 100% fuel and so are significantly more energetic
